The Story

The social issue that I will be discussing is childhood obesity. This has grown to be a huge problem within the last 10 years due to the growth in technology and the lack of exercise. The two fields I think will adequately address the problem are health and medical field, and the education field. Health and medical because there has been an extreme outbreak of the number of children that are hospitalized because of obesity. They are placed on medicine not only for weight loss but for psychological reasons also such as depression, suicidal thoughts, and anxiety. Due to being overweight or obese children are bullied or picked on in the education systems, this then leads to the children having negative moods and low self-esteem. Which ties the education system into play, but not only for the reasons listed above but for a list of others. One being that they take a hit because physical education classes aren’t as strenuous as they once were. P.E. classes aren’t mandatory anymore and studies show that during the time when these classes were mandatory the childhood obesity levels were not as high as they are today. Not having mandatory P.E. classes deprives children of the physical activity that would normally receive when not at home. They also take a hit because of the cafeteria service that they provide. They don’t offer children a healthy option in the elementary schools, but instead they are fed pizza, cheese burgers, and chicken patties daily. The solution to this problem I think is to provide children the option to eat healthier in the school systems, and for communities to have some sort of outlet for children to be able to perform physical activity.
